During the OCAD grad show, I was approached by Michael Wandelmaier and Jessica Fortner, two very nice people who run the website Squidface & The Meddler to do an interview. I was already familiar with the site because they have interviewed a bunch of my all-time favourite cartoonists and comic-artists, so of course I said yes. Anyways the interview went live this weekend so I am super excited! Hopefully I don't sound too wordy or pretentious, most of that is probably spill-over from my final thesis essay. Low Quality Avatars

So here is the tentative first page of a book project I have started this summer called Low Quality Avatars (might switch up some things up in the border and add some halftones). It is going to be a self-indulgent mish-mash of science fiction trope and noir/hard boiled detective narrative. A guest-artist in my thesis year final crit suggested I look at T.S. Eliot's poem The Wasteland, because of all the referencing and allusions to pop-culture I make in my art, so this little book of weird poetry is kind of in response to that.

As you can see in the above photo of my new studio space I just started renting. I have a few pages on the go at a time and really want to have it finished before the end of the summer. Not sure about whether the finished book will be colour or black and white and this point, and I am definitely considering making some CMYK silkscreen prints of a few individual pages. The top photo is me at my table at this year's TCAF. The picture was taken by a nice gentleman named Louis Fishauf, who randomly asked to take a photo of me and then somehow also got my email. Anyways here's his website he's got some pretty neat stuff on it---------> Link

And the other photo is of me installing my work for the OCAD grad show. I ended up deciding to have my work framed and my wallet is still reeling from that perhaps bad decision. Oh well they looked nice! Oh yeah and this photo was taken by Aanchal Malhotra, a fellow printmaking student at OCAD.

OCAD Grad Show & TCAF

So I have two upcoming showish type things that I am pretty excited about in the next week or so. The first one is my school's graduation exhibition entitled The Show Off. All the departments in the school are showing all of the graduating students work all throughout the classrooms and hallways of OCAD. The opening is on Thursday night and should be pretty busy, but if you don't want to have to deal with the crowds the show is up all weekend too. I should be pretty close to my work all night and I would love it if you came and said hi or whatever.

The other opportunity that I have to show my work this coming week is TCAF, or the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. The awesome cartooning collective Wowee Zonk was given the opportunity to curate a small press room of experimental and avant-garde print and comic artists and they asked me to come in on one of the days. The Beginning of the End

It is almost the end of my thesis year and my time at OCAD. I am a little sad but mostly glad, this year has been a little too intense and I am really excited to get into my new studio space and get a drafting table and silk-screening equipment set up. Anyways here are two new things that I have been working on, the first being a poster for an animation retrospective that my friend Naomi Hocura is putting on. I am really excited to be doing posters again, I didn't really have time this year because of how busy I was with thesis work. The artist whose work this screening will be focusing on is Keiichi Tanaami, an amazing painter/printmaker/animator, and the event is being organized through ANGURA! Naomi's awesome avant-garde Japanese art curatorial collective. Oh and the most important part, it is also a fundraiser for Japan! Anyways check out their website if you are interested: http://angura.org/. The second image is a digtial composite for one of two prints that I hope to finish before the OCAD Grad Show in May. I am trying a couple of new things (simpler composition and borders + more succinct references + rhyming poetry) in an attempt to refine exactly what I like about my work and also to speed up the process a bit so I can come away with more finished pieces. This piece has mostly Time Machine film and movie references but there are also some small allusions to Shakespeare, Power Rangers, Dark City, Doctor Who, and Work of Art.

Toronto Hearts Japan

I am going to be donating a print to this charity event being held at the Gladstone that will be helping to raise funds to send to the people of Japan. Not only will this event be a way to pick up some affordable art by some very well known artists (check out the list at the bottom, it's insane!) it will also be getting some money to some people who desperately need it. Here is some of the info off of the facebook event page:

Narwhal Art Projects, Invisible-Friends and friends are excited to host Toronto Hearts Japan, a fundraiser for our far-away loves. Our hearts have been broken by news of devastated towns and people separated from their homes and families, and we want to help. This event lets all of us who feel a special connection to Japan lend a hand in our own way. All proceeds will be donated to The Red Cross and to helping rebuild the Birdo ...Flugas Artist Centre and Community in Shiogama.

Toronto Hearts Japan is an exhibition, silent auction, and two (count them!) parties at the beloved Gladstone Hotel (with DJ Paul E. Lopes and DJ Jun). So my thesis show is coming up really soon. I actually wish it was a little further away in fact, but what can you do? Either way though, I am really excited to showing besides some of my favourite printmakers and with some of my bestest of friends. You should really come out and check out the great variety of work. Our thesis class was split into two shows and this one entitled Ideal Situation, has a strong emphasis and very graphic and illustrative work. Here are some pages from a e-zine I just made for my Advanced Digital Print class. They are all mandala-inkblot type compositions made from screen capping and bitmapping Pokemon sprites. All of the text has been taken from the results of a bunch of cheesy Pokemon related personality tests aimed at children. The zine is basically supposed to be talking about how pop culture relates to identity formation and how I was obsessed with personality tests during my adolescence. Oh yeah, and the title is a nod to the Flaming Lips song Convinced of the Hex.

New Drawing & Site

I finished another drawing for my thesis body of work, this features a variety of worm-man-robot-woman-hybrids. Was mulling over a strange mix of Dune, Blade Runner, Tamagatchis, and computer viruses a lot when doing this drawing. In this piece I have also noticed that I am starting to use less large over the top hand drawn typography. I am starting to favour the use of repetive symbols and more subtle text. Not sure if this will be a long-term choice but I am like it for now.

Life Partner Deathmatch

So I just finished my newest colour print for my thesis body of work. This one was a little disappointing because it turned out a little more saturated than I would have preferred, though in the end I am still happy with it. I think that I just need to completely remix my inks instead of working from batch that I have been using. Also I tried pin registration for the first time and they were pretty cool, I am pretty sure that is how most professional screen-printers work.

Anyways this print is also going to be a show coming up at the Gladstone being organized by friend Diana VanderMaulen. I am really excited because my girlfriend Lauren Pelc-McArthur is also going to be showing one her paintings in this show. I haven't been in a show with her in like a year so I really can't wait.

People's Choice

So my print, Avatar of Moro, was selected as the winner for the People's Choice Award for the printmaking category in the recent Art of the Figure exhibition up in the Great Hall at OCAD. I think it is up until the end of the week if you are interested in seeing the print in person. Besides that, my next thesis studio critique is coming up fast and I hope to have two new silkscreens finished by then, and I am also working on a bunch of bitmap-comic collages for an upcoming zine.

So here is a drawing that I have been working for far too long. This one is all about spy fiction and the dualities inherent to the genre. I had a lot of fun selecting references from a variety of films, video games, and comics of the genre as well as constructing all the wordplay that occurs within this piece. Like the last black and white drawing I uploaded this one will have a border added and will be converted into a CYMK screen print. I am excited because for this upcoming print I will be switching over to pin registration. Hopefully this means much less printing errors!

Printmaking Thesis Fundraiser

Here is a collage I have been working on for my Advanced Digital Printmaking class. This first project was based around the idea of the collage party where everyone brings in some source material to contribute to the class's collective pool of imagery. The imagery in this collage is drawn from a large variety of sources including but not limited to Jack Kirby, Betty Boop, Akira, and Dragon Quest. I hope to have two more done before this coming Monday, so I'll have to get cracking.

I was recently interviewed on Hard Feelings, one of my favourite art and design blogs. Personally in retrospect my answers in the interview make me cringe a bit, like the feeling you get when looking back at an old journal entry, or hearing your own voice on an answer machine... Also I wish they hadn't asked me to send in a photo of myself, I didn't have any good recent photos and left it to the last minute then just gave up and used Photobooth. Swiss Shallot

This is a small drawing I made recently for a friend who is compiling a small zine. The source image is small cropped portion of John William Waterhouse's famous painting The Lady of Shallot, and text is taken from the poem from which the painting is based upon. Right now I am not really sure if I want to go on to make it into a full colour print. Also I just found out, upon showing it to my girlfriend, that it is also a song lyric by a Canadian singer Lorenna Mckinnett. Hurray for unintentional pop-culture references.

I just finished a new print earlier this evening, and I think it is technically one of the best I have ever done. I made it for an upcoming holiday group exhibition. coming up at Narwhal Art Projects called The Unicorn. I am really excited for the opportunity to show besides some artists that I am always really admired. Not entirely done, I want to add in some more detail behind the figures and the portraits, maybe even the hands as well. I needed to scan it and hand it in today with a paper I wrote on pastiche, postmodernism, and pop culture. Can you spot any references? The title is taken from a Border Crossings article that compare the authenticity of contemporary abstraction to the appropriation prevalent in 70's and early 80's punk and disco. Eventually this will be a large CMYK screen-print, probably something like 20 x 28"

Mass Hypnosis is an experiment in printmaking as a collective, immersive and time-based medium. For the duration of the show, the participating artists (OCADU printmaking students and alumni) will cover as much of the gallery space as possible with their screen-printed patterns. Printopolis artist-in-residence Stefan Hoffmann will also participate, printing directly on the gallery windows. Pulsating, coloured lights will light the resulting collective mural, animating the coloured prints to music and live performances. An experiment in maximalism and neo-psychedelia, Mass Hypnosis hopes to create an audio-visual space where printmaking can be re-imagined.

Here is an album design that I have been working on for awhile now. I am not sure if this will be the finished final copy because I am sending it off to another more senior level graphic designer to do all the type and inside booklet and other technical stuff like that but I figured I would post this version anyways.

INTERNSHIP

Another thing that has been exciting and keeping me busy lately is my internship with the Toronto drawing artist Nicholas Di Genova. He is someone I have known since my first year of art school when he came and did an artist talk at OCAD, and I have always been a great admirer of his work. I also was recently hired at the art gallery/store Magic Pony on Queen West. If you haven't been there they sell a lot of really cool designer toys, clothing, and books. It has been really amazing there so far, I am learning so much and get to talk to people about art all day. Between this, my internship, and the summer class on small press publication a I am taking, my summer is filling up really quickly!

It is mostly comprised of artist who work in black and white and are highly illustrative with their styles. The last issue was really great, I couldn't wait to get my hands on one and the launch party was so fun too. 99 RED BALLOONS OPENING

I have mentioned it a couple times before but another event coming up that I unfortunately won't be able to attend that I am involved in, is the 99 Red Balloons show at Canteen Life gallery in Ottawa. All of the work is either going to be sold for 66 or 99 dollars and is supposed to be approximately 9x9 inches. I should have photos to post from that soon because I have a friend who is going to be attending. If you are in Ottawa you should check it out and let me know how it went!

I have been chosen to exhibit some of my print and zine work in the Small Press Schooner room at TCAF this Saturday. The room is sponsored by Broken Pencil and is curated by some of my favourite artists currently working in the city: the comic collective known as Wowee Zonk. Besides me there is also going to be a bunch of other artists that I admire and respect showing in the small press room so you should really come by and check it out if you are planning on coming to TCAF this year.

Part one of a two part silkscreen series, each of which will be about 22x3o inches. I am going to be printing it using the CMYK method so it will only be 4 layers (plus a bottom white layer but that is only because I am going to be using a cream coloured paper) and still manage to get quite a high number of colours. With this piece and some of the other recent work I have done I am really trying to reference my early visual inspirations of comics, video-games, D&D, Magic cards, and sketch-book pages. some stuff from my second year painting class. i had a critique that didn't go so well today for the paintings: too graphic, too obvious, too predetermined, too flat, black lines are too thick no room for exploration... Oh well, they were supposed to be figure paintings anyways so i don't know why i am surprised.

Here is a drawing and an accompanying print (it will be a six layer screen-print with an acrylic matte medium transfer as the key-block). I think that I will be working with this format for awhile because it lets me kind of make things that resemble comic frames.

In other news,the show I am curating at Industrees gallery has a name: NO SLEEP. It will have drawing works by myself, Peter Kalyniuk, Reid Jenkins, Alexendra Mackenzie, Filip Anton, Lauren Pelc-McArthur, and Joseph Thompson. The opening is tentatively scheduled for the first Friday in April from 8pm to 11pm and will run the entire month.

I have also been invited to participate in a couple of other art things. The first is an upcoming show in the OCAD Student Gallery that will be going on during the graduate exhibition. I think I will and make something similar to the piece above though perhaps in colour.

also there are some illustrations I was commissioned to do for Broken Pencil magazine.

This is an illustration I finished yesterday for The Andy, a McMaster University newspaper that focuses on the arts. This is the first editorial that I have ever done, and I think I am pretty happy with the results. It was easy and fun, and I think I am supposed to do a few more for them in the near future. The editor who asked me to do the illustrations is named Grace Evans and she makes some pretty cool zines, you should check her out.

Also I made this for my digital printmaking class, may fuck around with some more...

Album Design for a fiddle named Jaron-Freeman Fox. Check out his myspace here. Although I am really a fan of handwritten text, I think I really like the way this album turned out. Looks all classy with the Canadian Council for the Arts symbol and the brown/black/white colour scheme.

Flashlight Radio album design

So I finished the final layout for my latest commission, an album design for a Toronto indie-folk band called Flashlight Radio. Working with them was so fun and easy, we managed to come together agree on a design and get it made within roughly a week. Flashlight Radio has also commissioned me to do some t-shirt designs for them. They are all fairly similar to the flashlight on the front cover of the EP. I am not sure what colours they will end up settling on but I included a few possible variations.
